Diabetic Foot Care

InStep Foot Clinic offers comprehensive foot care for our patients diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus. Dr. Busch believes that a patient can best be served by preventing the unfortunate consequences of peripheral neuropathy and diminished circulation commonly seen in people with diabetes mellitus. Care starts with an initial examination at which time; circulation, nerve function, skin integrity, and bone/joint deformities are evaluated and areas of concern are identified.

Call us in Edina, Minnesota, at (952) 926-3566 for more details
about our
 diabetic foot care treatments.

  • Palliative Care
This includes nail care and debridement of any thickened calluses. Recommendations will be provided to patients on skin and nail care. We offer many foot care products to moisturize and protect skin from the consequences of diabetes mellitus. We also offer topical medications to treat skin/nail infections and pain which is often associated with diabetes mellitus. Individuals will be educated on monitoring feet for any skin changes that may foreshadow potential problems.

  • Diabetic Shoes
If a patient is recognized to have any bone deformities such as hammertoes or bunions, then specialized diabetic shoes are recommended for these patients. Diabetic shoes are covered by Medicare/Medicaid and most other private insurance companies. Pre-certification is obtained from a patient's primary care physician to confirm that they are currently receiving treatment for diabetes mellitus. As part of a comprehensive care plan, we work with Dr. Comfort Shoes to provide custom fabricated inlays and comfortable shoes that meet the needs of our patients.  To view our line of diabetic shoes go to http://www.drcomfortshoes.com.

  • ABI Circulation Studies
American Diabetes Association recommends screening of all individuals over the age of 50 years, diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, for peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Screening should be done at an earlier age if there are multiple risk factors such as smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholestrol, or a family history of heart disease. The Ankle/Brachial Index (ABI) is an easily performed examination used to screen people for peripheral arterial disease. InStep Foot Clinic can provide ABI screening for our patients utilizing Padnet. Test results are interpreted by local vascular surgeons, and a copy of their report is provided to your primary care physician. Individuals with PAD are at higher risk for heart attack and stroke, therefore it's important to identify the severity of diminished circulation. To obtain more information about PAD go to www.Padnet.com and click on education.

  • Surgery
People diagnosed with mild to moderate foot deformities may require surgery to prevent additional complications. If not properly treated, a foot deformity such as a hammertoe or bunion may result in a foot ulcer which could ultimately lead to amputation of a lower extremity. Dr Busch has experience in performing many surgical procedures to correct problems with feet. Corrective surgery can prevent any devastating consequences associated with Diabetes Mellitus.

Do I Need a Test for PAD?

Peripheral Arterial Disease(PAD) is a serious circulatory problem in which the blood vessels
that carry blood to your arms, legs, brain or kidneys become narrowed or clogged. It affects over 8 million Americans, most over the age of 50. It may result in leg discomfort with walking, poor healing of leg sores/ulcers, difficult to control blood pressure, or symptoms of stroke. People with PAD are at significantly increased risk for stroke and heart attack. Answers to these questions will determine If you are at risk for PAD and if a vascular exam will help us better assess your vascular health status.
